Sundrenched, Bailey Island
If you know Bailey Island, this is the old Cribstone spot right at the end of the bridge. Grab a seat outside overlooking the water and the bridge. The setting is special, but thankfully the lobster roll is good enough that the view isn’t doing the work for it.
Sundrenched gets the important part right: plenty of fresh Maine lobster and very little getting in its way. The butter-grilled bun and small amount of mayo add just enough richness without turning the lobster into salad. One of the strongest classic rolls I’ve had in Maine.

Lobster Roll
Morse’s, Harpswell
Morse’s sits at Lookout Point on the Allen’s Seafood property, overlooking a working Harpswell harbor. Grab the roll, find a seat by the water, and watch the lobster boats come and go. It feels much more like coastal Maine than a polished waterfront restaurant does.
Heavy on fresh lobster and refreshingly straightforward. This was one of the more generous rolls I tried, with big pieces of meat instead of everything being chopped down and buried in dressing. Exactly the kind of lobster roll I want from a place like this.

Deluxe Lobster Roll
State Line Lobster, Kittery
Right off Route 1 in Kittery, this is an easy stop just after crossing into Maine. I’d skip the debate over mayo versus butter and order the Deluxe. It’s the version here that gives you both, and it’s the one I’d go back for.
Get the Deluxe. The lobster is lightly dressed in mayo, then finished with melted butter on a toasted brioche roll. It sounds rich, but it works. You get the cool, creamy Maine-style thing and the richness of a buttered roll without either one taking over.

Mac's Downeast Seafood, Auburn
Auburn isn’t where most people go looking for a Maine lobster roll, which is part of why Mac’s is worth knowing. It’s more seafood counter than coastal photo op, with both lobster-salad and clearmeat rolls on the menu. Come for the seafood, not the scenery.
A good, straightforward lobster roll. Fresh lobster, a generous enough portion, and none of the overthinking you get at some of the more destination-oriented spots. It wasn’t the best roll I had, but I’d happily order it again.

Conn. Style Lobster Roll
Becky's Diner, Portland
Becky’s is more Portland institution than lobster-roll destination, and that’s exactly how I’d approach it. It sits at the head of Hobson’s Wharf and has been feeding people on the working waterfront since 1991. Get the lobster roll because you’re at Becky’s, not because someone told you it’s the single best roll in Maine.
A solid, old-school lobster roll. Fresh-picked lobster, mayo and lettuce, nothing particularly fancy. I had better rolls elsewhere in Maine, but this is an easy 4/5 and I’d order it again.

Lemon Dill Lobster Roll
The Lobster Haul, Damariscotta
The Lobster Haul is tucked behind Elm Street in Damariscotta, so this feels more like a place you find than a place designed to pull you off Route 1. Their lobster is sourced from working harbors around Round Pond, Pemaquid, South Bristol and New Harbor. If you’ve already had your share of traditional rolls, this is where I’d try one of the variations.
The lemon dill is the reason this one stuck with me. It adds a bright, herby edge to the lobster without burying it, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. After enough classic mayo and butter rolls, this was a nice change of pace.
